Economic Growth Fueled By Continued Massive Immigration Equals Certain Eventual Disaster

As Kevin Lynn’s 11/7 op ed entitled “Citizenship for Sale with EB5 Visa” tells us, virtually anyone can become a US citizen by paying $500,000.

The ways for entering the US legally and illegally have multiplied and the whole system is in need of serious reform. By maintaining present annual additions of legal and illegal aliens into the US, we can anticipate growing from 320 million now to over 450 million by 2050. It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that the US has the second highest per capita carbon footprint in the world.

Our government and business leaders continue to push the mantra of 3% growth on a planet with finite resources. Even religious leaders see economic and political benefit from the prospect of continued growth as good for their own tribal interests.

Thus, to keep this growth going it is essential to have more people (i.e. aliens) so we can add houses, schools, jobs, you name it to the flow of goods and services. Reason mandates that growth in a finite space has limits, but no one seems willing to confess the obvious except the farsighted voices of the founders of the Club of Rome or demographer Paul Ehrlich and those who understand the growing pressures on all our resources worldwide, both renewable and non-renewable.

In his article, Dr. Glen Barry informs of a paradigm which can’t be ignored, but likely will be until sheer horror of it becomes immutable. So while these ‘growthaholics’ bleat (perhaps unconsciously even) for more and more immigrants, understand that more people from a planetary sense equals a sure road to disaster. Realize that perhaps the unintentional demands for those innocently seeking more building permits, more government subsidies, or simply more numbers to their own tribes means no restraint in numbers and hence growth. Sustaining a low or no growth world needs to become a priority, and soon or Dr. Barry’s proven trends toward unsustainability will be fulfilled.

I am not an optimist, as I have seen no major bloc of power taking the first step toward restraint. In fact, China just abandoned its one child policy and others seems fixated on more and more growth.
