Biden’s Open and Shut Asylum Executive Order

Hello and welcome to another Institute for Sound Public Policy podcast. I’m the Executive Director Kevin Lynn In this series, we offer our short take on daily stories impacting working Americans. On Tuesday, June 4th, president Biden announced he would suspend asylum if more than 17,500 border encounters occur in a week. If there were less than 10,500 hundred border encounters, then the processing and release of illegal aliens into the country would continue a pace for the fourth straight year. Overall, Biden’s policy would still allow half a million border encounters a year, while asylum is meant to provide refuge for those facing political persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership.

The vast majority of the people coming to the US are not real asylees as 80% of asylum cases are rejected. The term asylum seekers is, in reality, a media euphemism to describe illegal aliens. Our take Biden’s border policy is too little, too late after three full years of him and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas allowing the whole world to come to the United States, Biden can if he wanted to completely shut down the southern border. However, he doesn’t. Instead, he’s permitting some law breaking for 10,000 lucky individuals who made it in under his arbitrary threshold. The Biden administration mocks the laws of this country by allowing the privilege of breaking the rules for some while punishing others.

Additionally, while this border policy toughens the administration’s de facto open border policy, it has a number of wide loopholes. For example, entering the country via customs and Border patrol app known as CBP one will still be permitted. All the illegal alien claiming asylum needs to is schedule his or her arrival on the phone and show up at the appointed time once they get over this speed bump entry into the United States is pretty much assured US Customs and Border Protection can process appointments for 530,000 people per year. But understand, using this app does not legalize the status of illegal aliens claiming asylum, or is Andrew Arthur of the Center for Immigration Studies put it, and I quote, A traveler who shows up at an airport gate without a ticket or an ID demanding a seat is not seeking to fly lawfully unquote Biden’s Border Executive Order is a weak attempt to make the situation at the southern border appear less chaotic and more regulated during this election year.

To conclude, the executive order informs us that securing the border and enforcing immigration law will remain off the table as they have for the past three and a half years. In President Biden’s America. If you want to come to America, you just have to ask yourself one question, and that is, are you feeling lucky?
