Our Elites Don’t Seem to Have a Problem with Immigration

Dear All:

Activist Jonette Christian once said what we need is a “really thoughtful examination of the immigration issue.” I hoped we’d get that from a recent Freakonomics podcast but it came up short.

What is clear, is conservative and liberal elites agree on many aspects. It’s just they continue to get immigration, wrong!

They believe in border security, that legal immigration is good and illegal immigration is bad. And both want more immigration versus less.

They think immigration is needed to fill labor shortages and immigrants will do the menial jobs Americans won’t.

Labor shortages are actually good. What’s bad is an open border and employment visa programs that bring in thousands of foreign workers and which commit them to a life of indentured servitude.

They claim declining fertility rates are a rationale for sounding the claxon for more immigration.

  • We don’t need more people.  We need greater productivity. And Japan provides a great example of how to increase productivity without increasing immigration.
  • This isn’t a new revelation. In 2000, the U.N. published, Replacement Immigration Is It a Solution for Declining and Aging Populations?, which concluded “thus, the past regular inflow [1.1 million] into the United States is well above the number of migrants needed to prevent a decline in the total population or in the working-age population.”
  • They’re quick to say immigration is America’s superpower. The U.S. has certainly benefited from it, but let’s put it in perspective.
  • We’ve been blessed with vast natural resources and a legal framework that gave lift to entrepreneurial talents and allowed many to accumulate wealth.

In Migration as Economic Imperialism, Brooklyn College political science professor Immanuel Ness says immigration has enriched the developed Global North countries. He hesitates to say, it hasn’t benefited most Americans.  The true beneficiaries are a small group of elites, conservatives and liberals, who want to create an empire — and empires require people.

In solidarity.
