The Institute for Sound Public Policy is releasing its research analysis on computer science job outcomes at UMass Amherst between American citizens and foreign graduates for the Class of 2022: 60% of American citizens and 86% of foreign computer science master’s graduates got jobs six months after graduation. Only 60% of American citizens who graduated with a master’s degree from UMass Amherst’s computer science college were working in any capacity after graduation. Meanwhile, 86% of foreign student graduates got jobs related to the computer science major through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Optional Practical Training (OPT). The total unemployment rate for the graduating class of 2022 is 12%. The unemployment rate for foreign students is 6.7%. The unemployment rate for American students is 23.5%. The employment and unemployment situations of American citizens and foreign students are vastly different, with American graduates faring worse than their foreign classmates even if they graduated from the same program.
