This week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted, “The inscription on the Statue of Liberty reads: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ That means something in New York.” Whatever it means to her, you can bet it means something very different to the 8.4 million citizens of New York City quickly waking up to the cost of open borders. The Statue of Liberty was a gift meant to commemorate the abolishment of slavery. It was not meant to extoll the country’s experience with immigration.
Earlier this week Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) asserted it is a right to enter the country illegally and ostensibly seek asylum. Asylum is for limited purposes and being a member of the “huddled masses” is not one of them.
My mother immigrated to the U.S. in 1952, and considered it a privilege, not a right. At that time, immigration policy was restrictive and very well regulated. Good immigration policy is based on a sound understanding of labor economics and demographics and is aligned with industrial policy that prioritizes the creation of private sector jobs that provide living wages and growth opportunities. And that’s no myth!
For a firsthand account of the cost of our failed border policies, I encourage you to watch my video podcast with Texans, Todd Bensman, an author and national security expert, and Sheena Rodriguez, president of Alliance for a Secure Texas. Both forever bury the myth that our border is “secure.”
In Solidarity.

The Myth of TPS Read More The Myth of the J-1 Cultural Exchange Visa
Last week Congressman Andy Biggs (R/AZ) let fly an amendment to H.R. 4665 – Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024 – that would eliminate funding for cultural exchange programs. Earlier this year over 4,300 foreign trained physicians (FTP) were awarded residencies at U.S. teaching hospitals. Many of them were brought in on the J-1 visa. It is important to note that, at the same time, 2,107 graduates of U.S. medical schools did not receive a residency. Without a residency, a doctor, despite years of education, graduating in good standing, passing the licensing exams – will never practice medicine. Moreover, employment agencies like to advertise how families in the U.S. can “benefit from up to two years of live-in childcare” by bringing in an au pair on the J-1 visa program. As to be expected, the special interest lobbies that have grown accustomed to their annual flows of cheap and exploitable labor are howling over Biggs’ amendment. Reply: There’s over a billion people who would meet the requirement you are setting here. It’s a silly proposal considering you have stated we are being “invaded” just by the sheer number of people coming across the border. Inviting them “legally” doesn’t change anything.

And from Reuters:
"He called for an "expedited legal approval" as part of a "greatly expanded legal immigration system" that welcomes "hard-working and honest" migrants, while also barring entry for those who are "breaking the law." Entering the country illegally is breaking the law. @elonmusk, the reason people are flooding over the border is because the Biden administration is offering "expedited legal approval!" They are doing this in the form of offering parole and expanding temporary protected status. Job #1 is seal the border and deport! Then we can have that discussion on who and how many to legally allow into the country.

The New Conservative Voter
Last month, American Compass surveyed Republican voters and found many are abandoning their traditional focus on tax cuts, deregulation and free trade and embracing pro-worker economic policies, instead. Their positions are now in direct opposition to the market fundamentalism still common in major conservative institutions.

Strong Towns Is Jane Jacobs in Action
The late Jane Jacobs is one of my heroes and her body of work continues to inform us on urban planning, economic policy, demographics and education. This fantastic exchange between Chuck Marohn of Strong Towns and podcaster, Lit With Charles focuses primarily on her seminal work, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, but the limits of top down planning and the importance of community and social cohesion are also discussed.
