This week, in the vein of “what goes around comes around”, those who espouse open borders and embrace ideologies that trash western values were hit with a karmic boomerang of sorts.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted, “The people of Israel are facing violent terrorist attacks and civilian kidnappings. I condemn plans to rally in Times Square tomorrow in support of the perpetrators of these horrific actions. The planned rally is abhorrent and morally repugnant.”
Well, Governor Hochul, it appears those who rallied in Times Square, Dearborn, Michigan and other U.S. cities, don’t share your affinity for Israel. Many probably emigrated from countries hostile to Israel and apparently those deep-seated feelings don’t magically disappear when one receives their Green Card.
The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “governing a large country was akin to cooking a small fish.” But that’s only true if a fair degree of social cohesion exists. Lacking that, governing a large country is a lot more like landing a marlin onto a canoe.
The issue here isn’t which side to back; as foreign policy decisions in matters as complex as this one require careful and deliberate consideration. But a lack of social cohesion, combined with mixed loyalties and sentiments to other nations, make it difficult to craft geopolitical policy solely in the best interests of this country.
And this realization is not limited to the war between Hamas and Israel. It pertains to and impacts policy with countries from Mexico to Ireland.
In Solidarity.
