Dear {name},
As to be expected, news and events occupying the headlines are coming at a rate that makes one think they are trying to take a sip of water from a fire hose. Immigration news over the past two weeks, focused on the President’s deportation agenda, with raids, sanctuary city resistance, and community impacts catching the interest of the media. Global migration challenges are amplifying the U.S. focus on border security. And it is getting raucous.
Last week, while attending CPAC 2025, I watched Border Czar Tom Homan vow to bring “hell” to Boston in a spirited admonishment to the mayor and city council who were frustrating his attempts to locate and deport illegal aliens. He stated:
“I read a story last night, the police commissioner of Boston. You said you “doubled down on not helping the law enforcement officers of ICE.” I'm coming to Boston, I'm bringing hell with me. I looked at the numbers this morning. I counted, I stopped counting at nine, nine child rapists that were in jail in Massachusetts. But rather than honoring an ICE detainer, release them back into the street. You're not a police commissioner. Take that badge off your chest. Put it in the desk drawer because you became a politician. You forgot what's like to be a cop.”
Although deportation numbers are not where they need to be, given Homan’s drive and increased interagency cooperation, they will be.
Also while at CPAC 2025, I attended a reception hosted by Patriots for Europe Foundation as well as a panel discussion (soon to be made available) on the European border crisis. It was great to talk to people from Germany, Hungary, Poland, Italy and the Netherlands and learn how they have been impacted by waves of immigration. We were also treated to an appearance via satellite of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. She is a force of nature and perhaps the most courageous of Europe’s leaders. She spoke of a change sweeping Europe and given the results of elections in Germany just two days later, she was spot on when she stated:
“Brave European leaders have been saying this for a long time, have said them many times before, even from the CPAC stage, urging Europe to rediscover its true and deepest soul, which has been sacrificed on the altar of wokeness, bureaucracy and mercantilism. These are common sense ideas now shared by a majority of European citizens as election result have shown. So, Europe is far from lost and it'll never be lost as long as conservatives remain in the fight.”
The past two weeks saw trade stories dominated by U.S.-led tariff threats, prompting responses like India-UK talks and U.S.-Japan negotiations. These reflect a broader narrative of economic repositioning amid Trump’s “America First” agenda. It will be interesting to see the ripple effect as these policies play out in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
